The Philippine Society of Sleep Medicine (PSSM), a non-governmental organization founded in 2002 to promote sleep health awareness, will launch the first-ever Drowsy Driving Prevention Campaign during the Sleep Expo on 15 November at the 3rd Floor, Tower 1, Clark Cityfront Mall, Clark Freeport, Angeles City, Pampanga.
Entitled “TABI MUNA!” (which means “pull over”), the campaign is a public awareness and road safety initiative that highlights the dangers of driving while fatigued. It encourages motorists to get adequate sleep before driving and to recognize early signs of drowsiness to prevent accidents — risks comparable to drunk and distracted driving Inspired by the US National Sleep Foundation’s Drowsy Driving Prevention Campaign, the PSSM aims to bring this advocacy closer to Filipinos by promoting the importance of sufficient rest and responsible road behavior.
“Our goal is to reach a wider audience — doctors, healthcare professionals, and business leaders who can champion the Society’s advocacy of educating the public about the dangers of fatigue and promoting safe behavior,” said PSSM president Dr. Jimmy Chang.
The Sleep Expo will also showcase the latest innovations in sleep technology and bedding, catering to those in the medical and wellness industries.
Following the expo, PSSM will hold the first Regional Caravan on 16 November from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Park Inn by Radisson Clark, Mabalacat, Pampanga. The caravan aims to strengthen partnerships and assist stakeholders in developing sleep services across Central Luzon. It will feature expert-led sessions on sleep health and networking opportunities for professionals.
While local data on drowsy driving for 2025 remain limited, global reports show that up to 30 percent of road accidents are linked to driver sleepiness, primarily due to sleep deprivation. A recent survey also ranked the Philippines first in Southeast Asia and fourth worldwide among the most sleep-deprived nations — underscoring the urgent need for stronger public awareness.
The event supports the advocacy behind Senate Bill No. 2063, or the Sleep Disorder Awareness and Education Act, filed by Senator Mark Villar, which seeks to institutionalize education programs on sleep health and safety.
