The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) conducted a cleanup drive at Sapang Baho Creek in Marikina City on Tuesday to help mitigate flooding by removing accumulated silt and debris.
Marikina City Mayor Maan Teodoro said the creek had become “heavily silted” over the years due to continuous water flow, noting that reducing the silt is a significant factor in managing flood control. Sapang Baho Creek carries water from tributaries in Cainta and Antipolo in Rizal province, which the MMDA also plans to dredge and clear.
MMDA chairperson Don Artes said the agency’s cleanup initiative, which initially targeted 23 creeks, has already surpassed expectations by reaching 32 creeks across the region.
