Filipino visual artist Martie Datu invites viewers into a quiet meditation on memory, identity and the enduring echoes of childhood in her fifth solo exhibition, “Becoming Us.” The show runs from 4 to 17 November at ArtistSpace, located in the Ayala Museum Annex, Greenbelt Park, Makati Avenue corner De La Rosa Street, Makati City.
A painter, entrepreneur and advocate, Datu is known for her deeply personal works rooted in themes of nurture and belonging. Her art often reflects not only her individual journey but also her broader engagement with community, creativity, and human connection.
At the heart of “Becoming Us” lies a poignant question: What remains of childhood once we are grown? Datu’s paintings do not offer straightforward answers. Instead, they unfold as dreamlike recollections — images of children captured in fleeting moments of play, silence and stillness. The figures, rendered without faces, transcend individuality and become universal vessels of memory — each both personal and collective, intimate and infinite.
By blurring identities and removing facial features, Datu invites viewers to complete these absences with their own memories. This silent dialogue between artwork and audience evokes intimacy, nostalgia, and reflection. Each piece becomes a mirror of the viewer’s inner world — an echo of innocence and the subtle persistence of the past.
Ultimately, “Becoming Us” reminds us that the fragments of childhood we carry — faceless, fragile, yet full — continue to shape who we are. Datu’s art offers not merely remembrance but renewal, an acknowledgment that we are all still, in our own ways, becoming.
