As the country braces for the impact of Super Typhoon Uwan following the devastation of Typhoon Tino, the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) appealed to the public never leave animals behind.
"Let’s remember that our pets depend entirely on us for their safety, security, and survival, especially in trying times," PAWS said in a Facebook post.
To protect animals during emergencies, the non-profit organization advised pet caretakers to prepare an evacuation plan and a pet go-bag with food, water, leashes, carriers, and essential supplies.
"Know where your nearest pet-friendly evacuation center is and how you can quickly transport them if the need arises," it added.
In urgent situations, makeshit carriers, such as laundry baskets, basins, or sturdy baskets can bring pets to safety.
If evacuation becomes necessary, PAWS advises to "always bring your pets," however, if one cannot, it reminded owners to unchain or uncage them "to give them a fighting chance to survive."
"Through every calamity, compassion is our strongest shelter. Let’s stay vigilant, stay safe, and stand by our animals, because their lives matter too," PAWS added.
Meanwhile, for stray animals with nowhere to seek safe shelter or call come, PAWS advises the public to offer a dry and safe space for temporary shelter, as well as some clean food and fresh water, or medical care if they are injured or week.
"Please always ensure your own safety by keeping your anti-rabies and other necessary vaccinations up to date when helping stray animals," it reminded.
"Every act of compassion makes a difference. If each of us helps even just one, together we can save millions of lives and create a kinder, safer world for them all."
