The Presidential Task Force on Media Security (PTFoMS) will investigate the alleged threats made by Julie “Dondon” Patidongan, the self-proclaimed whistleblower in the missing sabungero case, against a TV news reporter covering the story.
PTFoMS Executive Director Undersecretary Jose Torres Jr. said the agency has already contacted ABC-5 correspondent Gary De Leon, who confirmed the incident.
The matter was first raised by the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP), which De Leon approached for guidance after the alleged threats were made.
According to NUJP, Patidongan made the threats on October 27, 2025, when De Leon sought comment from him and his lawyers for a story he was preparing. NUJP said De Leon reached out to obtain Patidongan’s side of the case when he was told that Patidongan had accused him of being “biased and paid,” claims the reporter denied.
NUJP condemned the incident, saying it shows that journalists in the Philippines continue to face risks for simply doing their jobs. The group also urged media organizations to ensure proper safety protocols to protect reporters in the field.
PTFoMS said it expects to receive De Leon’s full account once he submits his affidavit.
As of press time, De Leon was in Roxas City covering developments following the devastation brought by Typhoon “Tino.” He is expected to file his formal complaint with PTFoMS when he returns to Manila.
