Karl Eldrew Yulo and Elisabeth Antone will be joined by a soon-to-be-formed two all-around teams in the 3rd FIG Artistic Gymnastics Junior World Championships at the Marriott Grand Ballroom.
Gymnastics Association of the Philippines (GAP) Cynthia Carrion told DAILY TRIBUNE they are now in the process of finding the best young male and female gymnasts for the team all-around events.
Initially, Karl Eldrew Yulo and Elisabeth Antone were the only Filipino representatives in the biggest gymnastics tournament for young gymnasts.
But with some of the delegations backing out, Carrion said the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) gave them the green light to field a team in the male and female divisions.
“In the beginning, they (FIG) gave us one male and one female gymnast. I asked if we could have more than one since we are hosts and after some thought and countries backing out, they allowed us to have a full delegation,” Carrion said
“We were just told about it now and we are just training.”
Carrion said they are screening young gymnasts for the best squad possible.
“For the male, we’re still going to have an evaluation because they’re juniors. They’re here right now in the gym,” Carrion said.
“It is the same with the female gymnasts. They have to prove themselves first that they’re better.”
The Philippines will be hosting the Junior World Championships for the first time in its history.
The tournament kicks off 20 November.
