15 volcanic quakes recorded in Taal

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported 15 volcanic earthquakes and 11 volcanic tremors in Taal Volcano in Batangas in the past 24 hours. 

In its 3 November bulletin, Phivolcs said the earthquakes and tremors lasted for around one to four minutes. It added that its main crater lake’s temperature remained at 69.3°C last recorded on 9 October. 

It also had sulfur dioxide emissions averaged 318 tons per day on 31 October. A 600-meter high plume was observed drifting southwest, with slight inflation on Taal Volcano Island. 

Taal Volcano recently had minor eruptions including a series of phreatic and phreatomagmatic bursts last 26 October. In October, Taal registered 367 volcanic quakes and 69 tremors.

Alert Level 1 remains in effect indicating abnormal activity. Phivolcs warned of possible hazards including steam-driven explosions, volcanic quakes, thin ashfall and accumulation of toxic gas. 

Entry in Taal Volcano Island also remains strictly prohibited along with flying an aircraft near the volcano’s summit.
