“How much more fakery can we take?”
This was the question of Senate President Pro Tempore Panfilo “Ping” Lacson on Thursday as he dismissed claims that former T/Sgt. Orly Guteza is under the custody of the Philippine Marine Corps.
Lacson said verification with Philippine Marines Commandant Maj. Gen. Vincent Blanco III confirmed that Guteza has never been in their custody, contrary to statements made by former Rep. Michael Defensor.
“As per verification made with the Marine Commandant, MGen Vince Blanco (PMA Class of ’91), through fellow cavaliers, Guteza is not and has never been under their custody. How much more fakery can we take?” Lacson said in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
Defensor had told a television interview on Wednesday that Guteza was under the Marines' custody.
Guteza was presented as a “surprise witness” before the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee during its 25 September hearing by Sen. Rodante Marcoleta, who said Defensor referred Guteza to him.
Earlier this week, Lacson noted that the Executive Judge of the Manila Regional Trial Court found discrepancies in the signature on Guteza’s notarized affidavit, recommending a preliminary investigation for falsification against Guteza and those who submitted the affidavit.
Senate CCTV footage reviewed by Lacson also showed that Guteza arrived at the Senate at 8:27 a.m. on Sept. 25, stayed in Marcoleta’s office for about 30 minutes, and later went to the gallery of the session hall for the hearing.
Guteza has claimed he delivered suitcases of cash to the homes of former Rep. Elizaldy Co and former House Speaker Martin Romualdez—an allegation Romualdez has denied.
Lacson emphasized that while Guteza’s statement before the Blue Ribbon Committee remains on record, these developments may affect his credibility.
