SM Cares, the corporate social responsibility arm of SM Supermalls, has stepped up its coastal cleanup efforts ahead of the rainy season, mobilizing thousands of volunteers to protect coastal and urban communities from flooding and pollution.
From January to June 2025, SM Cares deployed 8,571 volunteers across multiple SM malls and nearby coastal communities, collecting a total of 70,887 kilograms of trash from shorelines and waterways. The cleanups aim not only to protect marine ecosystems but also to reduce the risks of clogged waterways, storm surges, and waterborne diseases during heavy rains.
“This isn't just about picking up trash — it’s about saving homes, safeguarding health, and helping communities become more resilient to the floods and diseases that come with the rainy season,” said Engr. Liza B. Silerio, SM Cares Program Director for the Environment. “The work we do today has a direct impact on the safety of families tomorrow.”
The program combines environmental protection with disaster preparedness by clearing plastics and non-biodegradable waste that can block drainage systems in nearby barangays.
SM Cares is now preparing for its largest cleanup yet in celebration of SM Supermalls’ 40th anniversary. On 20 September 2025, it will lead the Philippine leg of the International Coastal Cleanup, targeting 40,000 volunteers nationwide. The main event will be held at SM by the BAY, with simultaneous activities across various locations.
