One of the core values instilled in the Lasallian education is Zeal for service, where zeal is “fueled by compassion for those whose need is great,” as per the Foundational Principles of Lasallian Formation. However, an individual questioned this value in a recent De La Salle Lipa freedom wall.
In an entry post by “Sofia Lovelace" to the page, she shared a scene she witnessed while waiting for a ride home, involving a junior high school students and a faculty from De La Salle Lipa.
According to the sender, the students handed a P20 bill to a man asking for some money when a woman, said to be a faculty yelled, “Kuya! Talagang dun ka pa sa bata nanghihingi ng pera!”. Shortly after, the woman told the students "Ineng, alam mo bang bawal magbigay ng limos sa mga ganyan? MAY BATAS YAN!”, leaving the students shaken after being scolded in public.
Some netizens reacted to the said Facebook post saying that the manner the teacher apprehended the students were wrong, but some also understood the concern for the student’s safety, and agreed that there really is a law that prohibits giving alms — the Philippine Anti-Mendicancy Law.
The sender of the post shared her concern about the school that teaches the students to uphold the Lasallian virtues, yet “shaming” those who are embodying the values. The post has since garnered more than 5,000 reactions, 134 comments, and 373 shares on Facebook.
