As Zhane fights for her life, her brother, Xyrus, shared details about the troubled relationship that preceded the tragic shooting at Sta. Rosa Integrated School.
According to Xyrus, Zhane and the suspect, Menard — who has since passed away — were in an on-again, off-again relationship for about a year.
The breaking point, he added, came when Menard allegedly spread misinformation about Zhane.
He stressed that there was no third party involved, but that jealousy consumed Menard.
Zhane had been planning to end the relationship. He claimed Menard also created a fake account to reach her.
Xyrus said he had warned his sister against dating Menard.
He added that Menard was older than his Grade 10 classmates.
Recalling another incident, Xyrus said Menard once punched a male classmate after seeing him borrow a mini-fan from Zhane, an act that sparked his jealousy.
Despite Menard’s possessive behavior, Xyrus said he never imagined he would harm his sister.
Though angry at the suspect, he clarified that he never wished for Menard to die.
The family is thankful for the support they’ve received and hopes to transfer Zhane to a private hospital given her condition.
He also criticized the school’s security measures, saying the attack might have been prevented.
Sta. Rosa Police Chief Maj. Williard Dulnuan assured that authorities are investigating the case and have increased patrols around schools. While school officials have remained silent, Dulnuan said coordination is underway to strengthen security protocols.
