Nearly one million Filipinos registered for Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) as of Wednesday, 6 Aug., according to the Commission on Elections (Comelec).
To check the registration of each applicant, they would still undergo a hearing by the Election Registration Board of each town and city, according to Comelec Chairperson George Garcia.
"We were surprised, but we were very happy because who would have thought that in five days, we would receive nearly a million registrants. There's never been anything like that in the history of Comelec," Garcia told reporters.
"We are grateful to all government agencies, such as the Department of the Interior and Local Government, and other private sectors that are joining us in this registration. To our fellow countrymen, thank you very much to all of you," he added.
The Comelec opened the 10-day nationwide voter registration for the 2025 BSKE on 1 Aug.
The poll body said it is initially targeting to get one million new voters despite the postponement of this year's BSKE that was scheduled to take place in December.
Earlier, Garcia said the Comelec would continue preparations despite the BSKE 2025 postponement.
This would include the procurement of 60,000 ballot boxes and other election materials.
President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. is set to sign on 12 Aug. into law a proposed bill seeking to reschedule to December 2026 the 2025 BSKE.
