Secretary Renato U. Solidum Jr. on Tuesday laid out the Department of Science and Technology’s (DoST) agenda to harness artificial intelligence (AI) and a circular economy to fuel job creation and local innovation in the Caraga region.
Speaking at the opening of the Regional Science, Technology, and Innovation Week (RSTW) at Robinsons Place Butuan, Solidum said the twin priorities are essential responses to global challenges.
“These are not mere trends — they are essential lifelines for resilient and adaptive development in the face of climate change, digital acceleration, and a globally competitive landscape,” he said.
Solidum emphasized a shift away from the traditional “take, make, dispose” model toward the circular economy. Among the region’s initiatives: mine tailings valorization, ScrapCycle Technology, and Project GreenWAVE in Siargao.
“We must scale these innovations, expand policy support, and create green jobs that foster environmental and economic resilience,” he said. “The Philippines — and particularly Caraga — must claim its share of that opportunity.”
He also touted DoST’s efforts to democratize AI through upskilling, R&D centers, and cross-agency partnerships. “Our vision is to develop a Filipino brand of AI —one that is ethical, inclusive, and grounded in our values,” he added.
Caraga has already seen gains. Over 1,000 DoST scholars have emerged since 2022. Innovation spaces and tools like the homegrown MapX, which helps LGUs automate tax mapping, are now contributing millions in revenue.
