A 27-year-old woman described as a rising star in New York real estate was among the victims killed during Monday’s shooting spree at a Midtown Manhattan high-rise.
Julia Hyman, a Cornell University graduate and associate at Rudin Management, was working late on the 33rd floor of 345 Park Avenue when the gunman, identified by police as 27-year-old Shane Tamura, entered the building and opened fire with an assault-style rifle.
According to a report by the New York Post, Hyman was one of the last employees still inside the office when the suspect exited an elevator around 6:30 p.m. and began shooting. Authorities say she was one of three people Tamura encountered on that floor.
One of the individuals, a longtime maid, reportedly managed to escape as Tamura fired in her direction. Another employee fled into a secured panic room. Hyman, however, was shot near a desk and did not survive.
Hyman joined Rudin Management in November and was widely admired for her work ethic and dedication. “She was a hard worker. That’s what they said,” said Siva Subramaniam, whose daughter was Hyman’s best friend in college, speaking to the Post following the young woman’s funeral on Wednesday.
