ECOP through the years

The future is NOT coming, it is here now and it is moving fast.

This was the speech I delivered as a reflection on the 50th golden anniversary of the Employers Confederation of the Philippines, or ECOP, at the Manila Hotel on 31 July 2025 with the theme “Leading Transitions For A Sustainable Future.”

Good afternoon, friends, colleagues, and fellow nation builders.

I am deeply delighted to welcome you all today to celebrate our 50 years of collaboration with our tripartite partners in the world of work.

Fifty years ago, the government, together with a group of visionary business owners, established the Employers Confederation of the Philippines or ECOP with one shared belief: that employers must not remain on the sidelines, but must actively shape the future of our country. That belief gave birth to ECOP — and since then, we have carried this mission with dedication and resolve.

Looking back, I feel a deep sense of pride. ECOP began as a modest voice, but over time, it grew stronger because it spoke with reason, integrity, and purpose. We stood firm during times of economic uncertainty. We spoke up for fairness in labor relations. And we stayed engaged, even when it was difficult.

We didn’t always have the easy answers, but we always tried to do what was right — for business, for the workers, and for the nation, along with our mandate to uphold the rule of law at all times, without exception.

Over five decades, we have seen that business can be a powerful force for good. Employers create opportunities, not just profits. During times of crisis like the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 — we saw how strong partnerships between employers, government, and labor can help our country endure and move forward. Today, I am proud to affirm that the spirit of tripartism — this vital collaboration between employers, government and labor — remains relevant, strong, and thriving.

As we celebrate ECOP’s 50th anniversary, we are reminded that our work is far from over. We must continue to echo in our boardrooms not only numbers but people, principles, and purpose.

The world of work is changing faster than ever. The future brings uncertainties and also possibilities — new technologies, emerging skills, and evolving workforce expectations are reshaping our environment. We cannot be passive observers. We must lead. We must help shape the right policies and mindsets that will define the future of business and employment in the Philippines.

I have heard too often in different forums about the urgent need to prepare for the future.

Friends, let me remind you as I have reminded our North Luzon colleagues: the future is NOT coming, it is here now and it is moving fast.

As business owners, our responsibility goes beyond our companies. We are part of building a stronger, more inclusive, and more competitive nation. This is the heart of ECOP’s mission — yesterday, today and tomorrow.

Let us honor the legacy of those who came before us with courage and commitment, as we speak with wisdom, compassion, and a clear vision for progress.

On behalf of the Board of Governors and the staff of the Employers Confederation of the Philippines, I extend my gratitude to everyone who has stood by us and supported our mission throughout the years. Your firm commitment and partnership have been instrumental in shaping the organization’s path and in achieving our shared goals.

As we celebrate our golden anniversary, we recognize the enduring relationships and collective efforts that brought us here today. This moment is a testament to the strength, resilience, and unity of our community.

Moving forward, let us continue with the same spirit of tripartism, integrity, and purpose that has defined our journey thus far. In the next 50 years, I am confident that we will be even stronger and more united than ever.

Thank you very much, and God bless us all.
