TecPlata, the Buenos Aires terminal of International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI), has launched a new regular shipping service linking the Port of La Plata to Montevideo, Uruguay, as part of efforts to boost Argentina’s global connectivity and ease port congestion.
The new 3S Shuttle Service Solution, developed in partnership with Independencia Shipping Lines (ISL), aims to offer the Argentine market a viable alternative to heavily trafficked ports. The service uses the ro-ro cargo vessel iNTREPiDO, which carries export cargo from TecPlata for transshipment in Montevideo.
“We are increasing connectivity to offer the market new options in response to the growing volume driven by Argentina’s foreign trade needs. We aim to provide more competitive alternatives to meet the challenges ahead,” said Juan Pablo Trujillo, CEO of TecPlata.
Trujillo emphasized TecPlata’s focus on listening to market demands and delivering customized solutions. “We constantly listen to the market and provide customer-tailored solutions, including this partnership with ISL. We trust that it will be successful in the context of volume growth,” he said.
Independencia Shipping Lines noted that vessels bound for global destinations often bypass Buenos Aires due to draft restrictions, resulting in an overflow of containers in Montevideo requiring transshipment. The company believes this new route will help address those logistical bottlenecks.
“Together with TecPlata, we developed a service between Montevideo and TecPlata to address this issue more efficiently and establish long-term relationships with various shipping lines,” ISL said in a statement.
The new service reinforces TecPlata’s role in supporting Argentina’s foreign trade by improving access to international shipping routes and contributing to more streamlined cargo movement in the Río de la Plata region.
