Celebrated Cebuano designer Cary Santiago took to social media to share his quiet frustration and heartbreak over eleven meticulously crafted ternos that were left unseen at this year’s State of the Nation Address.
“I completed eleven ternos, originally intended for today’s State of the Nation Address,” Santiago wrote. “I finished these orders months ago, well ahead of my September 11th Manila Gala.”
However, in a turn of events, the elaborate ensembles never made it to the red carpet. Just three days before the event, a memo was issued urging female lawmakers to wear simpler attire out of respect for the victims of recent flooding across the country.
While understanding the intent behind the directive, Santiago candidly reflected on the timing and its impact. Known for his sculptural precision and exquisite detailing, each terno was a testament to his signature artistry — now shelved, at least for now.
The situation speaks to the delicate balance between fashion and national sentiment — and how even in moments of silence, couture still tells a story.
