Filipino pride takes center stage as internationally acclaimed singer Sofronio Vasquez III is set to perform the Philippine national anthem at President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s fourth State of the Nation Address (SONA) on July 28 at the Batasang Pambansa Complex.
Best known as the first Filipino winner of The Voice USA, Vasquez expressed deep gratitude for the opportunity, calling it a defining moment in both his personal and professional life. “It’s a great honor. Nakadagdag siya ng aking self-esteem and worth as a performer,” he shared in an RTVM interview.
Now based in the United States, Vasquez flew home specifically for the event, calling his invitation to perform a symbol of his journey coming full circle. “Lupang Hinirang is a reminder that wherever you go, you always come back to your chosen land,” he said.
Vasquez emphasized the importance of unity in his message, describing the anthem as a call for Filipinos to rise above their differences. “We have to respect, understand, and embrace the simplicity and ambition of the Filipino spirit,” he added.
Performing the anthem a cappella, he acknowledged the technical challenge but said the emotional weight of the moment would guide him. “When you sing from the heart, it’s not just a performance — it’s a tribute to the country, to God, and to the people,” he said.
Millions are expected to tune in as Vasquez opens the historic address with a powerful rendition of Lupang Hinirang, marking another milestone in his inspiring journey from reality show champion to a voice of national pride.
