PNP Chief Nicolas Torre acting Mayor Sebastian “Baste” Duterte's scheduled "Boxing for a Cause" charity match raised over P300,000 in ticket sales and more than P16 million in donations on Sunday.
The matched pushed through at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex in Manila even though Duterte was a no-show at the 12-round exhibition match.
The proceeds will be turned over to the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) to help victims of recent weather disturbances.
Earlier, Mayor Baste, in a video message, explained his absence and clarified that he never issued a challenge in the first place.
"I didn't challenge you," he said, referring to Torre, “but if we fight, I will beat you.” Duterte offered to reschedule the match on “Tuesday, Wednesday, or any other day.”
With Baste absent, PNP Chief Torre was declared the winner by default.
Congressman Paolo Duterte previously said the fight should only proceed with legal waivers to absolve both parties of any liability in case of injury.
