Who would’ve thought that the girl once known for making audiences laugh and dance in noontime shows would one day strut her way into the world of crowns and sashes?
That’s exactly what Sugar Mercado did — turning heads and tugging heartstrings — when she was named Mrs. Universe Philippines 2025, a title that took not just her fans but even herself by surprise.
“Hindi ko ito linya, Tito Boy,” she admitted with honesty and humility during her recent guesting on Fast Talk with Boy Abunda. “Pero sabi nga ng manager ko na si Sir Wilbert Tolentino, ‘Kaya mo ‘yan.’” It was Wilbert, a known pageant mentor and talent manager, who gave Sugar the final push to enter the competition. “Ang sabi niya, magaling daw ako magsalita, at marami na rin akong pinagdaanan bilang isang nanay.”
Indeed, for Sugar — known for her years as a dancer, comedian, and TV host — the transition to the pageant world wasn’t about showcasing glitz and glamour. It was a platform for something more meaningful: sharing the strength, joy, and reality of motherhood.
“The essence of this pageant goes beyond beauty and brains,” Sugar shared. “It’s about what we, as mothers and wives, can offer to others—through our experiences, wisdom, and values.” And she couldn’t have embodied that better. With a natural gift for connecting with people, a quick wit, and years of juggling showbiz with parenting, Sugar represents a new kind of queen—relatable, real, and radiantly resilient.
Set to compete on 15 October against candidates from 35 countries in the global Mrs. Universe pageant, Sugar is now in full campaign mode. And yes—she’s bringing a Tagalog interpreter. “Wag po kayong mag-alala,” she quipped with her signature humor. “Kasi nung last time po, nag-Tagalog ako. Mas naiparating ko nang buo ‘yung mensahe. ‘Yung iba nag-English… ligwak!” she said, laughing.
