LAMITAN CITY, Basilan — The city government is optimistic that the launch of its midterm infrastructure projects — dubbed “transformational investments” — will mark a historic turning point, with support from the BARMM, national agencies and local partners.

Lamitan City Mayor Roderick H. Furigay announced on Thursday the construction of a 4.3-kilometer farm-to-market road from Sitio Tinog to Sitio Sapah Linsungan in Barangay Ubit. The P110-million project aims to boost rural productivity and improve access to local markets.

Furigay described the FMR as a vital link that will facilitate the transportation of agricultural goods and open up economic opportunities for farming communities that have long remained isolated.

He also announced that his administration is in the final stage of planning preparations for the Basilan Airport, which has been undertaken in partnership with former Governor Jim Salliman and through the initiative of the LGU of Lamitan City.

“This is more than a runway — it is a runway to opportunity. It will connect Lamitan to the rest of the country and the world, unlocking new doors for tourism, trade, and investment,” Furigay said.

Additionally, he said the Basilan Sports Complex will also rise to host regional events, train local athletes, and serve as a center for youth development and community pride.

The city will also launch a 32.5 million housing project, providing indigent families with access to dignified, secure, and affordable homes, he claimed.

He emphasized that “true development begins where people feel safe, stable, and supported.”

The city will also invest 98 million in a Level III water system project connecting Barangay Arco to Barangays Tumakid and Tandung Ahas, Mayor Furigay said.

Groundbreaking for the water system project is scheduled next week, aiming to finally deliver safe, potable water to more households and communities, he added.

To safeguard the environment and public health, the city government will also develop a 510-million sanitary landfill and septage treatment facility to ensure responsible and sustainable waste management.

Furigay also emphasized that in order to protect Lamiteños from the growing threat of climate change, the Lamitan City government is preparing for the implementation of a P2.1-billion Comprehensive Flood Control System.

The comprehensive flood control system, which will be implemented in phases, is targeted to prevent flash floods, and loss of lives, safeguard livelihoods and build resilience across low-lying barangays.

“These are not just infrastructure projects; they are a bold declaration of our vision. A vision of a Lamitan that is more connected, more competitive, more caring, and more prepared for the challenges of tomorrow,” Furigay declared.
