The Land Transportation Office (LTO) on Thursday announced it has revoked the driver’s license of the jeepney driver involved in a fatal road crash on Commonwealth Avenue in Quezon City last 13 April.
The accident resulted in the deaths of two college students and injuries to at least 16 other passengers.
LTO chief Assistant Secretary Atty. Vigor D. Mendoza II disclosed that the driver was found guilty of reckless driving.
“I also approved the revocation of the driver’s license of the jeepney driver for being an improper person to operate a motor vehicle,” Mendoza said.
The LTO’s investigation stemmed from the incident where the passenger jeepney was observed traveling at high speed and hitting another vehicle on Commonwealth Avenue. The jeepney then overturned, ejecting two students who were on their way to attend ROTC.
Both students died and at least 16 other passengers were injured.
The LTO’s decision, signed by Mendoza, stated that the driver “clearly violated the rule on reckless driving” not only by speeding but also by driving outside the designated lane for public utility vehicles on Commonwealth Avenue.
The decision also cited the driver’s failure to reduce speed on a downhill section of the road as a contributing factor, rendering him an “improper person to drive a motor vehicle.”
“Let this serve as a lesson about road safety and discipline. Because of this kind of driving, this jeepney driver lost his livelihood,” Mendoza said, adding that the action was in line with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive to pursue errant motorists as part of road safety measures.
