Adolf Alix Jr. is taking a moment to shine the spotlight not on himself—but on one of the very people who helped shape his career: the legendary director and actor Joel Lamangan.
As his newest film Unconditional readies for its nationwide release this June 25, Direk Adolf is brimming not only with excitement but with deep gratitude. At the heart of this project is a personal and professional full-circle moment: directing the very man who once opened doors for him in the world of Philippine cinema and television.
Built on trust and guidance
“A lot of my career milestones I have to thank Direk Joel Lamangan,” Alix shared candidly. “My first foray into writing for soap opera was through Kung Mawawala Ka, which he directed. I tried my hand at art direction in Mano Po 1: My Home—also under his guidance.”
It’s a humble acknowledgment from one of today’s most respected independent directors, who has forged his own path in both mainstream and indie circuits. But behind his quiet strength lies a creative foundation nurtured by Lamangan, a master of both big-screen melodrama and political realism.
From protégé to director
Now, decades since those early opportunities, Alix finds himself in a rare and meaningful position: directing his mentor. In Unconditional, Joel Lamangan steps in front of the camera as Jonel, a crucial character whose presence helps lead Rhian Ramos’s Anna to a life-changing realization about love, acceptance, and compassion.
“He has always been a reliable actor aside from being one of the leading Filipino directors,” Alix said. “I am humbled and privileged to direct him in this film.”
The role of a lifetime
In Unconditional, Lamangan’s portrayal of Jonel is subtle yet stirring. A veteran performer, he imbues the character with wisdom and emotional depth, providing the moral compass in a narrative that navigates complex relationships, personal truths, and the many forms that unconditional love can take.
For Alix, the film is not only a cinematic endeavor—it is a tribute to the mentors who guided him, the lessons that shaped him, and the artistry that continues to evolve through collaboration.
“Salamat, Direk Joel,” Alix wrote in a heartfelt post. “Looking forward to more collaborations in the future.”
It’s a rare moment when the director’s chair becomes a place of reflection and thanks.
