Maynilad Water Services Inc. — the concessionaire for Metro Manila’s West Zone — has replaced more than 3,293 kilometers of old pipelines since 2006.
This extensive undertaking, roughly equivalent to the distance between Manila and Tokyo, is part of Maynilad’s long-term Non-Revenue Water (NRW) management program.
In a statement, Maynilad said that the pipe replacement initiative directly addresses physical water losses, primarily caused by leaks and bursts in the aging distribution network.
These losses are a significant challenge in the densely populated and coastal areas Maynilad serves.
As of the end of 2024, physical losses accounted for 90 percent of total NRW, with commercial losses, such as illegal connections, making up the remaining 10 percent, which is consistent with the company’s approved Business Plan.
“Our NRW reduction program is a sustained, multi-year commitment,” said Engr. Ryan Jamora, Maynilad’s Central NRW head. “Replacing aging pipelines is a critical part of this strategy, as it not only reduces water losses but also improves pressure and reliability for our customers.”
