Mt. Kamuning footbridge set for demolition, replacement by year-end

ONLY a handful of pedestrians were seen using the controversial P10-million footbridge in Kamuning, Quezon City, infamously dubbed “Mt. Kamuning” due to its steep height. The structure has drawn heavy criticism for its inaccessible design, prompting President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to order its demolition during the launch of the Pamilya Pass at MRT-3 over the weekend. A new, safer footbridge is set to begin construction this year to address commuter safety and public accessibility.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has ordered the demolition of the controversial Kamuning footbridge — dubbed “Mt. Kamuning” for its steep and inaccessible design — after experiencing firsthand its hazards to pedestrians, particularly senior citizens.

Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon said Monday that the President was dismayed by the footbridge's design during a recent visit, prompting his directive to replace it with a safer and more commuter-friendly structure.

“Nung nakita ng Presidente... talagang nagulat siya. Ang sama ng pagkakagawa nito para sa mga kababayan natin. Ang utos niya simple lang — gibain, palitan ng bago na mas maayos at mas maganda, at safe,” Dizon said in an interview.

Dizon, who also climbed the bridge, called it dangerously steep and uncovered, making it risky especially when descending. “Napakatarik, napakahirap akyatin, walang cover. Napakadelikado kapag pababa lalo na sa mga senior citizen. Delikadong may madulas,” he added.

The replacement footbridge will be relocated closer to the busway stop so it can better serve commuters.

Dizon said the President wants the project expedited. The Department of Transportation (DOTr) aims to finish the new footbridge and demolish “Mt. Kamuning” within the year.
