A Filipino migrant worker lost her baby after suffering a miscarriage while aboard a Jeju Air flight from Clark International Airport to Incheon, South Korea on Sunday.
The woman, reportedly an overseas Filipino worker (OFW), was traveling with her husband, mother-in-law, and daughter to Saipan, with a layover at Incheon Airport, the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) said on Tuesday.
“A 911 rescue team brought the said OFW to INHA University Hospital in Incheon, but unfortunately, the baby was declared dead on arrival,” the DMW said.
A report by the Incheon National Airport Police dated 1 June stated that emergency services were alerted after a newborn baby boy showed no signs of breathing. Authorities said the baby was in cardiac arrest when found.
A South Korean news outlet reported that the Filipino woman was in her 23rd to 25th week of pregnancy. Under Jeju Air’s regulations, pregnant women under 32 weeks may travel without restrictions “unless instructed by a doctor to refrain from air travel.”
The OFW is reportedly in stable condition and is receiving support for her medical treatment, hospital expenses, and the repatriation of her infant's remains through the Migrant Workers Office in Seoul.
“To date, Incheon Police is conducting further investigation to the exact circumstances of the baby’s death,” the DMW added.
