May is widely celebrated as one of the most beautiful and vibrant months of the year, marked by blooming flowers, warmer weather and a spirit of renewal. On its last day, the Waterfront Cebu Hotel and Casino, together with the Clothes for Life and the Cebu Tourism Commission, proudly hosted the annual event known as the Santacruzan sa Sugbo, a deeply cherished tradition that commemorates the finding of the True Cross by Reina Elena.
This festive occasion is a heartfelt tribute to the Blessed Virgin Mary, reflecting the strong devotion of Cebuanos. The procession began in the serene and meticulously landscaped gardens of the hotel, where participants gathered in colorful attire, radiating joy and reverence. From there, the parade gracefully made its way to the hotel lobby, where it reached its grand finale.
A highlight of the event was the impressive lineup of reinas representing Cebu’s most stylish and influential personalities. These elegant figures were accompanied by adorable “little angels,” which gave a touch of innocence and charm to the procession. Adding to the lively atmosphere was the spirited performance of a drum and bugle corps, a musical ensemble commonly associated with the vibrant communities of barrios and barangays.
La Emperatriz y Reina Santa Elena was Cebuana fashion icon Happy Melendres, escorted by Javier Yu as Constantino. Happy was regal in a Philip Rodriguez masterpiece that had a sparkling matte gold tulle gown embellished with Cebuano artisanal lagang shell floral arrangement on the neckline and overskirt.
Joy Pesquera in a white, flowing chiffon terno with dainty floral appliques by internationally acclaimed fashion designer Cary Santiago looked every inch the Reina de las Flores.
Immediately after the last of the sagalas made their way down the dramatic ballroom, the mini carroza of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which was beautifully decorated with flowers and ferns, was ushered amidst applause and cheers.
A sumptuous Filipino dinner was the final agenda of the evening. The Santacruzan sa Sugbo at the Waterfront Hotel was not only a celebration of faith, but also a showcase of Cebu’s rich cultural heritage and community pride, leaving attendees with lasting memories of beauty, devotion and joyful camaraderie.
