Once hailed as the next big thing in Philippine basketball, Terrence Romeo’s story is a familiar one — a young phenom who soared to stardom, faced the consequences of fame, and is now writing a new chapter with humility, healing, and hope.
Romeo burst into the PBA in 2013 with the swagger and skill that drew comparisons to James Yap. Even earlier, in 2010, his electrifying style and magnetic presence had already made him a standout. At just 21, he was one of the most recognizable faces in the league. The spotlight followed him everywhere; fans screamed his name from the stands.
“Sobrang sikat, ‘di ba? Ang aga ko rin kasi sumikat sa PBA,” he recalled in a candid. “May times na parang ang sarap sa feeling na sikat. ‘Yung perks. ‘Yung mga tao, gustong kasama ka. Tapos nung may problems na, lahat sila nawala.”
Fame came fast — and so did the fallouts. Romeo admits that, at one point, the attention got to his head.
“Ang pinaka nag-remind sa akin na maging humble ay ‘yung situation ko,” he said, referring to public challenges, including being dragged into a swindling case — allegations he vehemently denied.
“Hindi ko ‘yun personality,” Romeo said. “Alam ko sa sarili ko na never akong nanloko ng tao or nangtapak ng kapwa.”
Rather than retreat, Romeo chose growth.
“Marami akong natutunan sa mga pinagdaanan ko,” he said. “Kailangan maging maingat sa mga taong pinagkakatiwalaan.” Those hardships, he said, revealed who truly stood by him and underscored how easily reputations can be tested in public life.
Now 32, Romeo is standing on the cusp of a new chapter. At the launch of ABCVIP—an online gaming platform he now endorses — Romeo announced that he is “at peace” and physically and mentally ready for a return to the court.
“Healthy ako ngayon. Tuluy-tuloy pa rin ang pagko-condition ko. I’m working out. I’m ready,” he said.
While he hasn’t finalized which PBA team he’ll join next, Romeo is eyeing a squad where he can contribute meaningfully and find a better fit. Off the court, he’s also embracing advocacy. Through ABCVIP, he supports grassroots basketball and community initiatives in underprivileged areas.
“It’s really rewarding to know that I’m able to encourage these kids, who may one day become star athletes,” he said, drawing from his own story of struggle and self-reinvention.
