Agriculture Secretary Francisco P. Tiu Laurel Jr. on Saturday said the Department of Agriculture is ramping up efforts to modernize and safeguard the country’s livestock, feed mill, and gamefowl industries.

Speaking at an industry gathering, Tiu Laurel emphasized the urgency of building a more resilient and productive agriculture sector amid climate change, supply chain disruptions, and global competition.

“Through the Department of Agriculture’s INSPIRE program, expanded livestock insurance, and stronger disease control measures for African Swine Fever and avian influenza, we are taking concrete steps to modernize and protect the industry,” he said. “But government action alone is not enough. We need your partnership.”

He underscored the key role of feed millers in promoting animal health, generating rural jobs, and creating a stable market for local commodities like corn. “As you face rising costs and supply bottlenecks, the DA supports innovation in local feed ingredients and more sustainable production practices,” he said.

Tiu Laurel also acknowledged the importance of the gamefowl industry, calling it a vibrant part of the rural economy and a keeper of Filipino cultural heritage. As the sector evolves, he said the DA is committed to working with breeders to professionalize operations and uphold science-based, responsible animal care.

The country’s livestock and poultry sectors were valued at P790 billion in 2023, accounting for roughly 3 percent of the national GDP.

Highlighting Batangas’ leading role in livestock and feed production, the DA chief lauded the resilience and work ethic of its communities.

“More than its infrastructure, Batangas is defined by its resilient and hardworking people. This spirit is what drives our agriculture sector forward,” he said.

Tiu Laurel closed by urging stakeholders to invest in research, empower farmers, and drive innovation. “Let this congress be a platform for collaboration, innovation, and action,” he said.
