Education and local authorities in Laoag City, Ilocos Norte have concentrated efforts on issues such as water availability and extreme heat in light of ‘danger’ heat index recorded in the province since the start of the 2025 Palarong Pambansa on 24 May.
In a statement by the Department of Education (DepEd), the Education department and local government units (LGUs) have stabilized electricity supply and coordinated with the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) to ensure supply of potable water in billeting schools not originally designed for large populations.
Game schedules have also been adjusted to minimize exposure during peak heat hours, particularly from late morning to early afternoon even for indoor sports.
“Tournament schedules were also adjusted to avoid games between 10:00 AM and 3:00 PM, even for indoor sports with limited ventilation,” DepEd said in a statement.
Since 24 May, the heat index in Ilocos has been ranging from 42°C - 48°C falling under the ‘danger’ category, according to the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).
Authorities have also made concentrated efforts on managing health, safety, and logistical concerns. Health screening protocols have also been implemented for all athletes and delegates requiring medical certificates prior to arrival and physical checks on-site.
Emergency care and psychological first aid are also offered by medical teams.
Over 1,700 medals are up for grabs at this Palarong Pambansa as elementary and high school student-athletes compete in 34 sports. The games will draw close on 31 May.
