Matthew Diaz showed no signs of nerves when he won the secondary boys 48-kilogram category of the 65th Palarong Pambansa at the Laoag Central Elementary School on Monday in Ilocos Norte.
Best known as the nephew of Tokyo Olympics gold medalist Hidilyn Diaz, the 14-year-old lifter from Jalajala, Rizal, said he just relied on his training at the HD Weightlifting Academy.
The incoming Grade 9 student at Jalajala National High School lifted 73kgs in the snatch and 93kgs in the clean-and-jerk for a total lift of 166kgs.
“I didn’t feel any pressure but it's better for me to get the gold medal,” Diaz said.
“I just trained every day except for Sundays. I didn’t expect the win and my coaches just told me to enjoy it.”
