Non-stop rains brought by the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) have triggered widespread flooding and landslides across Zamboanga del Sur and Maguindanao, displacing at least 7,000 families.
Data from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) showed heavy rains affected several towns in Mindanao, with flash floods and landslides reported in Kumalarang, Zamboanga del Sur.
One person with disability died in the incident.
In Ampatuan, Maguindanao del Sur, a landslide hit three houses and forced the evacuation of some 24,000 individuals.
Clearing operations were conducted Wednesday by the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office in Don Marcelino, Davao Occidental, where muddy soil blocked one lane of a road.
PAGASA Senior Weather Specialist Glaiza Escullar said the ITCZ has been bringing rains to Mindanao since 14 May. Dipolog City, Zamboanga del Norte, recorded the highest rainfall at 48 mm on Tuesday, followed by Davao City with 44.2 mm on Monday.
“The rains that are caused by the ITCZ are expected to last until Friday," Escullar said in a phone interview.
Residents are advised to monitor updates via PAGASA’s official social media platforms, particularly the Mindanao PAGASA Regional Services Division.
