Senator Win Gatchalian said on Sunday that discussions about the possible replacement of Senate President Francis “Chiz” Escudero remain purely informal.
In a radio interview, Gatchalian said there have been no formal discussions among senators about replacing Senate President Chiz Escudero — or about who might take over in the 20th Congress.
“I think many are waiting for the proclamation to finish first. After the proclamation, I believe that’s when the discussion will begin about what the Senate will look like, especially in terms of leadership,” he said.
“For now, there hasn’t been much formal discussion. For now, it’s just among ourselves — the members,” he added.
Talks of a possible leadership shake-up involving Escudero have been circulating even before the 20th Congress opens in July.
Senator-elect Vicente “Tito” Sotto III earlier expressed his intent to lead the 24-member chamber once again, a role he previously held during the administration of former President Rodrigo Duterte.
Sotto, without divulging the identities of those urging him to oust Escudero, said at least three to four senators are convincing him to run. He is one of the Senate’s most senior members with three terms under his belt.
