The Philippine government has launched the Kadiwa ng Bagong Bayaning Mangingisda (KBBM) program to support the livelihood of Filipino fisherfolk operating in the West Philippine Sea (WPS).

In a media briefing, Palace Press Officer Undersecretary Atty. Claire Castro said the program aligns with the government’s broader goals of enhancing food security, promoting maritime development, and ensuring regional stability.

A key feature of the initiative is the deployment of the government-owned fish carrier M/V Mamalakaya, which purchases fresh catch directly from fishermen at sea and delivers it to local fish ports.

As part of the program, WPS fisherfolk also receive fuel and ice subsidies to help ease the burden of transportation and operational costs.

“As assistance to fishermen struggling with transport and other expenses,” Castro said.

During its initial deployment on 9 May in Bajo de Masinloc, Zambales, the M/V Mamalakaya bought 20.3 tons of fresh catch directly from fishermen and delivered it straight to the port.

A total of 120 fisherfolk and 11 fishing vessels benefited from the maiden run.

Castro added that the program not only supports local livelihoods but also reinforces Philippine presence in the resource-rich waters of the WPS.
