The Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) reported Wednesday the arrest of five suspected members of “Salisi Gang” who allegedly preyed on passengers at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3.

In a statement, the MIAA disclosed that the arrests occurred on Sunday following weeks of surveillance by the MIAA Airport Police Department (MIAA-APD) in coordination with the private operator of NAIA, New NAIA Infra Corp (NNIC).

Authorities said the group was involved in multiple thefts between 28 April and 54 May, often targeting sleeping or distracted passengers during the 10 p.m. to 11 p.m. security shift change.

According to the MIAA, one member would divert the victims’ attention while others stole unattended bags or electronics. Of the estimated 10 members, five were apprehended, and two others escaped after a brief chase. Police recovered two cellphones and a laptop from the suspects.

Three cases have been filed against the arrested individuals: theft, resistance and disrespect to persons in authority, and attempted escape. Authorities are also investigating potential links to other incidents in Metro Manila.

MIAA general manager Eric Jose Ines praised the operation.

“This successful arrest highlights our commitment to protecting all passengers while making clear that we will not tolerate criminal activity at NAIA and reflects the dedication of our airport police and our strong collaboration with NNIC,” Ines said.

Meantime, MIAA-APD chief Col. Bing Jose advised travelers to remain vigilant, not to leave their valuables unattended, and to report any suspicious activity to uniformed officers.
