Senator Christopher “Bong” Go has called on Filipinos to offer prayers ahead of the 7 May papal conclave in Vatican City, where 133 cardinal-electors will gather to elect the 267th pope following the death of Pope Francis on 21 April.
The conclave will be held in the Sistine Chapel, following centuries-old tradition, with strict secrecy observed among the cardinal-electors. The event marks a pivotal moment for the global Catholic community as it prepares to choose a new spiritual leader.
“As we mourn the passing of Pope Francis, a leader of faith and humility, we also enter a period of prayerful anticipation. I ask our fellow Filipinos to pray for the cardinal-electors, that they may be guided by the Holy Spirit in choosing the next shepherd of the universal Church,” Go said.
Go also emphasized the involvement of Filipino cardinals in the conclave, describing their role as a source of pride and responsibility for the country. Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle is set to assist Camerlengo Cardinal Kevin Farrell in overseeing the conclave preparations. Cardinals Pablo Virgilio David and Jose Advincula will also participate as electors.
“This is a moment of great honor and responsibility for the Philippines. Our very own cardinals are not just representing our country, but also bringing the voice and faith of the Filipino people into this sacred process,” Go added.
The senator paid tribute to the legacy of Pope Francis, who led the Church for over a decade with a focus on humility, compassion, and outreach to the marginalized.
“Pope Francis reminded us of the power of humility and service. His papacy was a beacon of light in challenging times, and his teachings will continue to guide us even as we prepare to welcome his successor,” he said.
Go called on the faithful to remain prayerful and hopeful as the Church undergoes this transition.
“This is a time for reflection, solidarity, and faith. Let us pray that the next Holy Father will lead with wisdom, compassion, and a genuine heart for the people. May he continue the mission of building a more inclusive, just, and faithful world,” Go said.
The Vatican has confirmed that the conclave will follow traditional protocols, including total confidentiality. White smoke rising from the Sistine Chapel chimney will signal the successful election of the new pope.
“In moments like this, we are reminded that faith is what binds us, strengthens us, and gives us direction. Together, let us pray not just for the Church, but for a better world under the guidance of a new leader of peace,” Go concluded.
