The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has deployed at least 2,500 traffic personnel Sunday in anticipation of heavy traffic as people return to the capital after the Holy Week break.

According to Charlie Nosares of MMDA Metrobase, while no significant traffic buildup had been monitored on Metro Manila’s roads as of Sunday morning, despite ongoing construction and repair work on parts of C-5 Road in Pasig and Mindanao Avenue in Quezon City.

Nosares said it was positive that no vehicular accidents had been reported, likely due to lighter traffic volume, but advised motorists to remain cautious while driving.

The MMDA, however, anticipates traffic to become heavier in the afternoon as more people return to Metro Manila, adding its readiness with the deployment of necessary traffic personnel to manage traffic flow and assist returning travelers.

Nosares said the MMDA expects traffic to begin increasing around 4:30 p.m., with a steady influx of vehicles continuing until Monday morning.

During the Holy Week, activity in Metro Manila and other cities across the predominantly Catholic Philippines typically slows down as many travel to provinces for religious observances, family visits or vacations.

Work and regular traffic patterns are expected to resume on 21 April and the MMDA advised those returning to work to leave early to avoid potential traffic congestion.
