Senator Christopher “Bong” Go welcomed the Negros Occidental provincial government’s plan to establish permanent relocation sites for families displaced by Mt. Kanlaon’s ongoing unrest, calling it a proactive step that supports his advocacy for stronger disaster resilience and dignified housing solutions.
“It’s high time we provide safer and more decent relocation for our countrymen during disasters,” Go said. “That’s why I commend this initiative by the provincial government of Negros Occidental. These are the kinds of efforts we should support.”
Provincial officials earlier announced plans to relocate residents living within the 6-kilometer danger zone of Mt. Kanlaon to safer, permanent areas. As of 8 April , the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) reported 8,031 affected families from 23 barangays in Bago City, La Castellana, Moises Padilla, La Carlota City, Murcia, San Carlos City, and Pontevedra.
With the volcano still under Alert Level 3, residents have not yet been cleared to return, as the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology warns of continued risks such as pyroclastic flows, ashfall, and toxic gas emissions.
Go highlighted that such initiatives underscore the importance of Republic Act 12076 or the Ligtas Pinoy Centers Act, which he principally authored and co-sponsored. Signed into law on 6 December 2024, the measure mandates the construction of permanent, fully equipped evacuation centers in all cities and municipalities nationwide.
“Evacuees can’t stay in tents or classrooms forever,” Go said. “There should be safe, proper, and complete facilities where they can rest, eat, and care for their health while in crisis.”
