First Gen Corp. has signed an agreement to supply 100 percent renewable energy to Nippon Sanso Ingasco Group’s (NSIG) manufacturing facility in Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental.
Under the deal signed early this month, First Gen will deliver 2.6 megawatts of electricity from its Mindanao Geothermal Power Plant in North Cotabato — operated by its subsidiary Energy Development Corporation (EDC) — to NSIG’s facility within the Phividec Industrial Estate.
NSIG is a subsidiary of Japanese industrial gas giant Nippon Sanso Holdings Group.
“As part of the Nippon Sanso Holdings Group’s global commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, we are continuously working to minimize our environmental impact,” NSIG president Takenori Kawachino said.
Full RE supply
“Partnering with First Gen to power our operations in Tagoloan with 100 percent RE marks a significant milestone in our sustainability journey. This initiative aligns with our commitment to adopt cleaner energy sources for our production facilities and promote sustainable solutions across our global operations.
We look forward to building on our partnership with First Gen as we accelerate our decarbonization efforts in the Philippines,” he added.
The deal was made possible through the Retail Competition and Open Access (RCOA) provision of the Electric Power Industry Reform Act, which allows large power users to purchase electricity directly from qualified suppliers.
“Transitioning to direct RE supply under RCOA comes with challenges, but the benefits far outweigh them,” said First Gen chief engagement officer Carlo Vega.
“We are committed to helping our customers like NSIG achieve their decarbonization objectives through ensuring stable and efficient power supply from RE sources and optimizing electricity utilization using energy efficiency solutions.”
