  • Two names have C-drama fans absolutely swooning right now: Sang Yan and Luan Nian. One is the protective, quietly devoted heartthrob who never stopped loving his first crush; the other is the razorsharp, emotionally guarded boss whose pride almost cost him the love of his life. Together, they represent two of the most addictive romance archetypes in modern Cdrama—and the actors behind them are only making the obsession worse.

Who are Sang Yan and Luan Nian?

Sang Yan: The ‘I’ll wait forever’ love interest

Sang Yan appears in two highprofile stories that fans often discuss together. In Hidden Love (2023), Sang Yan is the older brother of the female lead, Sang Zhi. He’s cool, composed and fiercely protective, the kind of guy who notices everything but says little — until it matters.

In The First Frost (2025), Sang Yan becomes a fullblown romance lead. He and Wen Yifan were highschool classmates with mutual feelings, but misunderstanding and trauma kept them apart. Years later, fate and a housing mishap make them roommates, reopening old wounds and old love.

What fans love is that Sang Yan is the “black cat outside, golden retriever inside” type — aloof at first glance, but endlessly tender once he lets you in. He remembers small details, shows up when it counts, and is willing to risk everything to protect the woman he’s never stopped loving.

Luan Nian: the brilliant, difficult boss who learns to love better

Luan Nian, also called “Luke” at work, is the male lead of The Early Spring (2026), a workplace romance that premiered on Youku and Netflix in late August 2026.

He’s a top advertising creative director: intimidating, blunt, and brutally honest. Shang Zhitao, a bright but inexperienced newcomer, joins his agency and ends up in a secret, yearslong relationship with him.

The drama’s central heartbreak is that after six years of loving him in the shadows — and enduring his arrogance and a cruel “you’re replaceable” remark — Zhitao finally walks away. Only then does Luan Nian realize what he’s lost and begin the hard work of chasing her back.

What fans love is that Luan Nian is the ultimate “growth arc” romance. He starts as the cold, demanding boss and slowly becomes the man who puts aside pride, owns his mistakes, and fights for a second chance.

    Why fans are obsessed

Both stories hinge on love that never truly died. Sang Yan waits years for Yifan; Luan Nian spends the series undoing years of emotional damage to win Zhitao back. That “too late until it isn’t” tension is catnip for romance fans.

Sang Yan’s protectiveness reads as care, not control. He shields Yifan from a stalker and stands by her through trauma. Luan Nian, meanwhile, has to unlearn workplace power dynamics and learn respect, making his redemption feel earned.

From awkward cohabitation and sleepwalking mishaps to charged office glances and longsuppressed confessions, these dramas milk every almostkiss and every loaded silence. Fans also love that both leads are ambitious. Zhitao grows from intern to entrepreneur; Yifan is a reporter rebuilding her life. The romances feel adult, not fairytale, which makes the payoff more satisfying.

Meet the actors behind the swoon

Bai Jingting brings a livedin warmth to Sang Yan in The First Frost that makes the character’s quiet devotion feel real rather than scripted. He plays a bar and restaurant co-owner and videogame company team lead who becomes Yifan’s reluctant roommate and inevitable soulmate.

Jing Boran is a veteran actor-singer who first rose to fame after winning a talent competition and debuting in the boy band BoBo before transitioning into film and TV. In The Early Spring, he plays Luan Nian, the brilliant but emotionally stunted creative director whose sharp tongue hides deep care.

    Where to watch

The First Frost is available on major Cdrama platforms, with international streaming details varying by region. Hidden Love is widely streamed internationally and remains a key entry point for Sang Yan fans. The Early Spring premiered on Youku and Netflix on 26 August, with daily episode drops through early September.
