China on Wednesday cautioned the Philippines against actions that could "threaten regional peace" following the U.S. approval of a potential $5.58 billion sale of F-16 fighter jets to Manila.
"The Philippines' defence and security cooperation with other countries should not target any third party or harm the interests of a third party. Nor should it threaten regional peace and security or exacerbate regional tensions," foreign ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said.
The US State Department announced Tuesday that it had approved the sale of 20 F-16 jets and related equipment to the Philippines, strengthening ties with its treaty ally amid growing tensions with China.
The sale, which aims to enhance the Philippine Air Force’s maritime awareness and air defense capabilities, is part of efforts to support stability in Southeast Asia.
The US described the Philippines as an important partner for political stability, peace, and economic progress in the region.
