MGEN’s 152.7-MW solar expansion hikes Luzon power supply

Early this year, MGEN’s renewable energy arm MGreen inaugurated three solar plants, one each in Bongabon, Nueva Ecija; Cordon, Isabela; and in Baras, Rizal, all of which are expected to supply clean power to over 154,000 homes while driving economic growth in host communities.

A total of 152.7 megawatts (MW) of new solar power capacity has been added to the national grid following the completion of Meralco PowerGen Corp.’s (MGEN) latest renewable energy projects.

MGEN, through its renewable energy arm MGreen, inaugurated three solar plants in Bongabon, Nueva Ecija; Cordon, Isabela; and Baras, Rizal in the first quarter of the year.

The facilities are expected to supply clean power to over 154,000 homes while driving economic growth in host communities.

Contributing to clean energy goals

“Our expansion of MGreen Baras Solar is about helping communities, protecting the environment, and contributing to the country’s clean energy goals,” said Dennis B. Jordan, president and CEO of MGreen, during the plant’s inauguration.

With the recent expansion, Baras Solar now has a total capacity of 80.1 MWac, making it the first and only solar farm in Rizal.

The two other solar farms — 19.8 MW MGreen Bongabon Solar in Nueva Ecija and 52.8 MW MGreen Cordon Solar in Isabela — were completed ahead of schedule under the Department of Energy’s second Green Energy Auction (GEA II) program.

The Bongabon facility is the first GEA II project to be completed at least six months early, while the Cordon facility is now one of the largest operational solar farms in Region 2 under the program.

MGEN’s total RE portfolio

MGEN’s renewable energy portfolio now totals nearly 400 MWac of net sellable capacity across seven provinces, including Bulacan, Ilocos Norte, Batangas, and Tarlac.

The company is on track to exceed its target of 1,500 MW of renewable energy capacity by 2030, with projects like the 3,500 MW MTerra Solar — set to become the world’s largest integrated solar and battery storage facility — slated for completion in February 2026.
