Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla said that spreading fake news can cause panic and a disruption of society, emphasizing the government’s aim to stay on the right side of the law.
“Fake news can unsettle society. It can cause panic, and we just want to ensure that we are on the right side of the law. We don’t want to create unnecessary anxiety among the people,” Remulla said.
He asserted, “Fake news is fake news. You all know it’s wrong to spread lies, especially with digital media being such a powerful tool. It can destabilize society. We are focused on the majority’s well-being, not the minority who seek to create chaos.”
Remulla urged the public to always speak the truth, saying it is everyone’s responsibility.
“The borders are becoming less significant. Soon, even those spreading fake news from abroad can be pursued,” he said, referring to vloggers residing outside the country.
He said that spreading fake news could lead to cybercrime charges, a distinct legal possibility that the government is looking into.
“I believe there are groups or individuals behind this fake news,” Remulla said. “You probably have the same guess as me, right?”
Currently, the National Bureau of Investigation is looking at about 20 vloggers suspected of spreading fake news.
