The long standoff between regulators and transport groups may soon be resolved if Transportation Secretary Vivencio Dizon follows through on his latest promise to finally advance the Public Transport Modernization Program.
During a media briefing on Monday, Dizon said the Department of Transportation is making the necessary adjustments to ensure that the program would benefit all stakeholders sustainably and inclusively.
Dizon also met with transport leaders, including those from Manibela, who are currently holding a three-day strike in protest of what they claim are inaccurate data presented by the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board regarding the industry consolidation.
Addressing these concerns, Dizon emphasized the need for closer collaboration among government regulators, transport operators and drivers.
“We need to listen to the operators and drivers to ensure the success of this transition from the traditional to modern public transportation systems,” he said.
Highlighting ongoing challenges, Dizon noted that the approval rate for consolidation efforts in the transport sector currently stands at 40 percent, with 86 percent of applications still under review.
