President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. praised the Philippine Army (PA) as a “pillar of strength and stability” during its 128th anniversary celebration at Fort Andres Bonifacio in Taguig City on Saturday.

Marcos emphasized the Army’s role extended beyond defense, playing a vital part in fortifying the nation’s security. “From strengthening our operations to enhancing our ability to detect, respond to, and recover from threats, it has played a vital role in fortifying our nation’s security,” he said.

The President also stressed the importance of integrity and selfless service, urging the soldiers to uphold their principles even in the face of challenges.

“In today’s time, the courage and skill of a soldier are not enough. What is needed is a resolve that remains unshaken in the face of challenges, principles that are not bent by fear or apprehension, and a heart that is always ready to serve faithfully without expecting anything in return,” Marcos said in Filipino.

He said that true service requires setting aside personal interests for a higher purpose. “Although we all play different roles, our shared goal should be to build a more united, just and truly peaceful nation.”

The President reminded the soldiers their service was not for themselves but for future generations.

“As we mark your 128th founding anniversary, we are reminded of why we choose to serve. We do it not for ourselves, but for the countless generations that will come after us,” he said.

He acknowledged the Army’s efforts beyond the battlefield, particularly in disaster response.

“Whether responding to natural calamities or assisting communities affected by recent volcanic activities, such as those near Taal and Kanlaon volcanoes, they were our first responders. They have proven themselves to be ready, reliable, and resolute in their sworn oath to their duty to our people,” he said.
