Nicholas Kaufman assembles Duterte’s ICC defense, confident of acquittal

British-Israeli lawyer Nicholas Kaufman has officially taken on the role of lead counsel for former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte in his ongoing case before the International Criminal Court (ICC). Kaufman, a seasoned international lawyer with extensive experience in ICC proceedings, has expressed strong confidence in Duterte’s acquittal, even at the earliest stages of the case.

Kaufman is now in the process of assembling Duterte’s legal defense team, though he has yet to confirm specific names. While reports suggest that former executive secretary Salvador Medialdea and former presidential spokesperson Harry Roque may be involved, Kaufman has stated that the final lineup is still under discussion.

The lawyer has also hinted at upcoming legal petitions, but has not disclosed specifics regarding the defense strategy. However, his track record in defending high-profile figures accused of crimes against humanity, such as former Congo Vice President Jean-Pierre Bemba and Central African Republic Minister Maxime Mokom, signals a strategic approach in Duterte’s case.

Duterte, 79, appeared before the ICC via videolink last week, where he was informed of the allegations against him related to his controversial war on drugs. Despite the serious charges, Kaufman has expressed optimism not only about Duterte’s defense but also about the possibility of bringing him back to the Philippines.
