JOLO, Sulu — In a significant step toward peace, security forces in Sulu province, in collaboration with the local government of Panamao municipality, successfully facilitated the settlement of three long-standing family feuds, known locally as “rido,” including a 35-year-old conflict.
Brig. Gen. Alaric Avelino delos Santos, commander of the 1102nd Infantry “Ganarul” Brigade, reported on Thursday that the peace talks were held at the Abdurajak Hall in Panamao, Sulu, with the joint efforts of the municipal government, police, and military.
Panamao Mayor Al-Frazier Abdurajak played a pivotal role in resolving the disputes, which had contributed to the slow economic development of the town.
The first conflict, a 35-year-old feud between the families of Munir Madzhali and Abod Ahamad from Barangay Lower Patibulan, originated from a killing in 1990.
The second dispute involved the Al-Quazar Basaluddin and Jeifar Sahid families from Barangay Kan-Ukol, sparked by a land issue and harassment.
The third was a feud between the Mandac Sahiron and Alpha Salaji families of Barangay Lakit, which began after the killing of a family member.
Delos Santos highlighted the success of the settlement as a testament to the collective efforts of local government, security forces, and the community in resolving conflicts peacefully.
“This achievement shows that peace is possible when we work together with a shared commitment. The Armed Forces will continue to support initiatives that foster cooperation and lasting harmony in the region,” Delos Santos said.
The settlement was witnessed by various key figures, including Col. Wilfredo Borgonia Jr., executive officer of the 1102nd Infantry “Ganarul” Brigade; Lt. Col. Homer Estolas, battalion commander of the 21st Infantry “Invincible” Battalion; and local police officials.
