There’s something magical about El Nido, Palawan.
As soon as you step off the plane, the air feels different — cleaner, fresher and infused with the scent of the sea.
For anyone coming from Manila, where the skyline is dominated by concrete towers and the streets hum with the ceaseless energy of city life, El Nido offers an entirely different world — one of tranquility, raw natural beauty and an unhurried pace that invites you to breathe deeply and truly disconnect.
For one escaping the hustle and bustle of Manila — where the traffic is relentless, noise is constant, and the air carries the weight of the city’s frenetic environment — El Nido offers an almost dreamlike escape.
The first thing you’ll notice is the fresh air, crisp and salty from the sea, carrying the scent of the lush forests that frame the coastline.
Next is the overwhelming sense of peace, as if the entire island is inviting you to slow down, breathe deeply and let go of the stress you didn’t even realize you were holding.
Manila is the heart of the economy, culture and urban life.
Skyscrapers rise against the skyline, streets pulse with movement and every corner has a story unfolding — whether in the form of honking jeepneys, harried office workers, or vendors calling out their daily specials.
While this energy fuels ambition and opportunity, it also takes a toll on one’s mental well-being. The noise, pollution and sheer pace of life in the capital can be exhausting.
El Nido, in contrast, feels like a sanctuary.
Here, the sky is an unbroken stretch of blue, the waters are impossibly clear, and the beaches, many untouched, invite you to just exist.
There’s no pressure to be anywhere or do anything other than appreciate the moment.
It’s the kind of place where time seems to stretch out, offering space for deep breaths and quiet reflection.
One of the most underrated aspects of El Nido’s appeal is its positive impact on mental health.
Studies have shown that exposure to nature — especially the sea — can significantly reduce stress and anxiety.
The rhythmic sound of waves has a calming effect on the brain, helping to lower cortisol levels and promote relaxation.
Many high-strung city dwellers will definitely benefit from the release.
The fresh air in El Nido is another gift. Unlike in Manila, where smog and congestion often cloud the skies, the air in Palawan is untainted, filled with oxygen-rich breezes that invigorate the body and mind.
Breathing deeply here feels almost therapeutic, as if each inhale is flushing out the mental fog accumulated from city living.
Then there’s the sheer tranquility of the beaches.
With its white sands stretching for miles, it is a perfect spot for meditation or simply sitting in stillness.
Secret Lagoon, hidden behind towering limestone cliffs, feels like you’re stepping into another world — one where silence is sacred and the water cradles you in absolute peace.
This serene paradise, however, is not just a retreat for weary city dwellers. It is also at the center of a massive tourism boom.
The tourism sector in Palawan saw significant gains in 2023, with an almost 90-percent increase in tourist arrivals compared to the previous year.
According to the Provincial Tourism Promotions and Development Office (PTPDO), Palawan welcomed a total of 1,527,159 tourists in 2023, a remarkable jump from the 814,621 in 2022.
El Nido led the municipalities in attracting the highest number of tourists, followed closely by Coron. San Vicente, Brooke’s Point and Linapacan completed the top five.
The influx of visitors translated into substantial economic gains, with tourism earnings reaching P57.2 billion in 2023 — an increase from the P30.5 billion in 2022, based on PTPDO data.
Meanwhile, the Philippine tourism industry hit a record P760 billion in revenues in 2024, up 9.04 percent from 2023, with 5.95 million international visitors.
Tourists are staying longer and repeat visits are high.
The Department of Tourism credits the pro-tourism policies, improved connectivity and strategic marketing for the growth.
El Nido has long been marketed as a premier tourist destination, celebrated for its island-hopping adventures, crystal-clear waters and dramatic limestone formations.
It has been featured on international travel lists, often dubbed as one of the most beautiful beach destinations in the world.
However, beyond the picture-perfect scenery, El Nido offers something deeper: a true retreat for the soul.
For urban dwellers, a trip here is more than just a vacation — it’s a chance to reset.
Whether it’s snorkeling through vibrant coral reefs, kayaking on serene lagoons, or simply watching the sun dip below the horizon in a riot of colors, every experience in El Nido nurtures a sense of inner peace.
In a world that’s always demanding more—more productivity, more noise, more movement — El Nido stands as a reminder that sometimes the best thing we can do is to pause.
It’s a place that allows you to disconnect from the chaos and reconnect with yourself.
And perhaps, that’s greatest luxury: the gift of fresh air, peaceful beaches and the undeniable sense that, even for a brief moment, all is right with the world.
