Ivana Alawi: From 'StarStruck' hopeful to YouTube queen

Ivana Alawi recently hosted a thanksgiving party for the entertainment press, offering a rare glimpse into her life beyond the curated content she shares with millions. The event became a platform for her to address recent controversies and reaffirm her unwavering spirit.

Born Mariam Sayed Sameer Marbella Al-Alawi on 25 December 1996, to a Filipino mother and Moroccan father, Alawi has carved a unique path in the entertainment industry. Her journey began in 2015 when she joined GMA-7's StarStruck Season 6. While she didn’t clinch the top spot, her talent and charisma secured her a place in the top 22 and a contract with GMA Artist Center.

Her career progressed with roles in various television dramas. In 2018, she played Rina in ABS-CBN’s Precious Hearts Romances Presents: Araw Gabi, showcasing her acting prowess. The following year proved pivotal, with appearances in Ang Probinsyano, her film debut in Open, and roles in 3pol Trobol: Huli Ka Balbon! and Sino ang Maysala?: Mea Culpa. Her performance in the latter earned her the "Best New Female TV Personality" award at the 33rd PMPC Star Awards for Television, a testament to her rising star power.

However, it was her foray into digital content that catapulted Alawi to unprecedented fame. Launching her self-titled YouTube channel in 2019, she quickly amassed a massive following, becoming the most-subscribed Filipino celebrity on the platform. Google recognized her impact, naming her the "Top YouTube Content Creator" in the Philippines for two consecutive years. Her authenticity and engaging content resonated with audiences, solidifying her status as a digital powerhouse.

Beyond her online presence, Alawi ventured into business, launching her own skincare brand, Ivana Skin, further showcasing her entrepreneurial drive.

Despite her success, she has not been immune to challenges. During the recent press event, she addressed her ongoing legal dispute with a jewelry brand, stating, "Nasa court po kami ngayon. Hindi ako pwede magbigay ng details, mapapagalitan ako ng lawyer ko (laughs)."

She also responded to rumors of an affair with Albee Benitez, following Ogie Diaz’s YouTube revelation. Benitez later issued a public apology to clarify the situation. Additionally, Alawi debunked false reports of having cancer, sharing that her mother was deeply worried until she confirmed it was fake news.

Alawi’s resilience shone through as she spoke about handling online criticism, stating, "Wala naman akong pakialam sa bashers ever since." She also emphasized her hands-on approach to content creation, revealing, "Wala akong team — ako lang talaga ang nag-iisip kung ano ang ilalagay sa content."

Raised in Bahrain, Alawi inherited her father’s estate after his passing in 2018. Her youngest sibling, Mona Alawi, is a former child actress. In October 2024, Ivana was hospitalized due to polycystic ovary syndrome, reminding fans of her personal struggles behind the glamour.

Ivana Alawi’s story is one of ambition, adaptability, and an unwavering connection with her audience. From her early days in StarStruck to her status as a digital icon and businesswoman, she continues to navigate fame and fortune with a blend of grace and grit.
