Savi Davison is on a mission to bring PLDT to greater heights.
Reliable on the offensive end, Davison has been the High Speed Hitters’ main weapon in their drive for a deep run in the 2024-2025 Premier Volleyball League (PVL) All-Filipino Conference.
The Filipino-Canadian winger delivered the goods in PLDT’s 20-25, 25-20, 25-20, 26-24, win over ZUS Coffee in the qualifying round to book a quarterfinals ticket last Tuesday at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City.
“I think it was just a mentality shift from preliminaries to… the playoff round,” Davison said after tying her career-best 34 points.
“Our coach told [the] team earlier that it’s a long road from here [leading to the] championship. So, it’s best for our team to set a standard. Hopefully, we move all the way up from here,” added the former US NCAA Division I standout.
Davison’s career outing forged a best-of-three quarters series against Choco Mucho.
Her explosive performance which led to the important victory, earned Davison the honor of being named PVL Press Corps Player of the Week presented by Pilipinas Live for the period of 4 to 6 March — her second this conference.
Davison bested teammate Kim Fajardo, who also stepped up big time against the Thunderbelles after main playmaker Angge Alcantara got hurt near the end of the opening frame, for the weekly nod of the competition streamed live and on-demand via the Pilipinas Live app and on www.pvl.ph.
She also edged Akari’s Ivy Lacsina, Chery Tiggo’s Cess Robles and Cignal’s Vanie Gandler for the weekly plum deliberated by reporters from print and online publications covering the pioneering volleyball league.
Davison is determined to complete her mission to deliver the franchise’s first-ever title — a goal she’s trying to achieve since her debut in the second 2023 All-Filipino Conference.
“I want a championship. I wanna be… at that really top spot at the end of the season, I guess I’m really preparing for that, so hopefully I’ll just keep performing until we get there and when that time comes,” said Davison, who is back after being sidelined by a minor knee procedure during the Reinforced Conference last year.
However, another huge hurdle stands in the way of PLDT as power-hitting Sisi Rondina and the rest of the Flying Titans, who haven’t lost a single game since the start of this year, are waiting in the next round.
“I think the top thing that comes to my mind right now is controlling our side of the net and making sure that [Rondina] does not score as much as she typically does,” said the hitter from University of Oklahoma and New Mexico State University.
“I think with that [thinking] we were able to control our side a little bit more [against ZUS Coffee]. So, that might be something we prioritize [opposite the Titans], but again they have other people that work, and we try to look at and take care of as well,” Davison said.
“Hopefully, it’s gonna be a good game.”
